Happy almost Valentine's Day! Can you believe it is time for conferences again? Time is going by much too quickly. I am looking forward to meeting with you this week and sharing the amazing progress your child is making in Y5s. Please let me know if your scheduled conference time or day does not work, I do have some flexibility in the schedule. Also, I will not be posting news next week. Have a wonderful weekend. Reminders/Notes/Upcoming Dates: Valentine's Day : Please remember to send valentines to exchange (13 in our class) on Tuesday. Your child only needs to write his/her name on the valentine- this makes it much easier when passing them out. Please no candy or food. Spring Field Trip to Meijer Gardens Butterfly Exhibit is Friday, April 19 We are planning to leave around 9:30 and return at 1:30 (this time may slightly change depending on bussing). Every child is welcome to bring an adult. I will send more details as we get closer to the date. February 13 and 15: Parent-Teacher Conferences February 16-19: Winter Break- No School Our valentine bags are ready for Tuesday! We have been focusing on how-to-texts. We are learning the importance of retelling and carrying out simple procedures. We made bookmarks by following step by step directions. We are game makers! The objective was to make games for our friends by using the given materials. Wow! I was so impressed with their creativity, problem solving skills, and ability to work together. :) We had a little afternoon fun on the Kids' Corner playground. We spent time drawing pictures of things that begin with different sounds. They are getting so good at identifying initial sounds in words. Math games are the best. Fine motors, counting, subitizing, and working together were all goals of the colorful snowman game. Ice skating to the beat in music.
Next Week: Tuesday: Library and Music (10:00-10:45) Thursday: Spanish (8:00-8:25), Art and PE (10:00-10:45) Friday: No School- Winter Break

February 13 and 15: Parent-Teacher Conferences February 16-19: Winter Break- No School We met with our second grade buddies. We made books, snowflakes, played games, and read together. I am not sure if the older kids or the younger kids enjoy it more! :) We played a fun matching game to help us learn the Spanish words for shapes. We have been focusing on how-to-texts. We discussed the importance of details when teaching someone how to do something. This was very evident when they tried to teach me how to brush my teeth. Where does the toothpaste go? Which end do I brush with? SO funny! We then followed the steps to make our own snow person using play dough. Ask your child to teach you to do something. On Fridays, we join the other young five class to sing praises to our Heavenly Father. I love listening to them worship Jesus through song and motions. Have I mentioned how blessed I am to spend my days with your precious kiddos?! Recognizing and identifying emotions is important. Using characters from the stories we are reading, we are making connections to our feelings. Are we afraid, worried, frustrated, sad, confused? We read the book, "How to Apologize" by David LaRochelle. This is an adorable picture book with silly examples that share how to and how not to say "I'm sorry." We all make mistakes and even though it may feel hard to apologize, it really can be easy.

February 13 and 15: Parent-Teacher Conferences February 16-19: Winter Break- No School The Colorful Snowman by Karyn Price is a cute book about kindness. We talked about how God made each of us different and that is what makes us special. We then drew our own snowmen and painted each one of them unique. A little peek at PE fun... Design It! Build It! is our new unit. Our focus is on the form and function of objects. We will explore how objects move and investigate their shapes and uses. We will also spend time in procedural texts and explore sequence of events.
Our Bible stories continue the theme of God's constant care for his people and his plan for the world. We read stories about how God cared for both Elijah and Elisha. We have been learning the verse from Deut. 31:6, "For the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you." Ask your child to show you the motions. Next Week: Tuesday: Library and Music (10:00-10:45) Thursday: Spanish (8:00-8:25), Art and PE (10:00-10:45) Friday: Chapel at 10:00, Outdoor Education (1:00-1:30) Dear Parents, This has been some crazy weather! I have to admit I do love the beauty of the snow - everything looks so bright and peaceful. The dark and dreary has been covered with a blanket of cleanliness. This reminds me of how God covers all our yuck with His beautiful blanket of grace...and because of His grace our sins are forgiven. I am so thankful we serve a loving and merciful God! Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. Psalm 51:7 January 23: Mrs. Horstman will be subbing for me. Please feel free to call the office if you have an immediate questions or concerns. Thank you. :) January 26: Early Release- dismiss at 11:10 Report Cards Posted February 13 and 15: Parent-Teacher Conferences February 16-19: Winter Break- No School Here's a little peek at our week... We enjoyed the LolliPops: Wild Symphony performance. The bus ride was pretty fun, too! :) Outdoor Education is the best...and I have the cutest Y5 friends! I truly enjoy watching and listening to them as they work together. Such an important skill. They have grown in their relationships with each other - we have definitely become a little family. I LOVE this family!
Next Week: Tuesday: Library and Music (10:00-10:45) Mrs. Horstman will be subbing. Thursday: Spanish (8:00-8:25), Art and PE (10:00-10:45) Friday: Chapel at 10:00, Outdoor Education (1:00-1:30) Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed your break (and snow day). It was wonderful to see my favorite five year olds again. I missed them! They were so excited to see each other. They had a lot of catching up to do. Notes/Reminders: Thursday, Jan. 18: Y5s-1st grade students will be bussed to Forest Hills Fine Arts Center to watch the GR Symphony perform. We will be leaving at 10:00 and returning by noon. Your child may still order hot lunch that day. Thank you to our room mom, Jeni, for helping to chaperone the field trip. January 26: Early Release- dismiss at 11:10 February 13 and 15: Parent-Teacher Conferences February 16-19: Winter Break- No School SNOW much fun! The "big" snow hill was a hit. How many kids can fit on a snow hill? :) Meet Sparkle. After reading the story "Sneezy the Snowman" by Maureen Wright, we made a snow friend to join us in our classroom. Unfortunately, when we returned from specials, Sparkle was a puddle of water. This prompted a discussion, so we read an informational text to learn several fun facts about snow. Ask your child to share something they learned. We drew/wrote in our journals about things we enjoy doing in the snow. STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) Project! We read the book, "A Bear Snores On" by Jane Chapman. We then talked about the importance of a den being strong and sturdy to protect animals from the outdoor elements. They were then given the task to build a sturdy den big enough for the bear to go in and out of using the materials given. This allowed for out of the box thinking, problem solving, creativity, and collaboration. We spent time reflecting on what we learned. I was VERY impressed! Next Week: Tuesday: Library and Music (10:00-10:45) Thursday: Spanish (8:00-8:25), Forest Hills Fine Arts Center- GR Symphony (10:00-12:00) Friday: Chapel at 10:00, Outdoor Education (1:00-1:30) Cookies 25 cents for snack Luke 2:11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. Christmas math is fun. We cut out the strips of paper then put them in ascending order of 1-10. We noticed each strip of paper had one more. Christmas Carolers! We had a group of third graders stop by our room to sing some Christmas carols. Gratitude Ornaments. We decorated our Christmas tree with all the things we are thanking God for this Christmas season. Christmas Party Fun!

I love the eagerness to light a candle, get cozy on the carpet, and read God's beautiful word together. It is my prayer that your child's heart will be filled with joy as we celebrate the greatest gift ever- JESUS! This year the Y5s and Kindergarten classes will be sharing the gift of giving with Gifts of Hope School in Liberia. Every $15 will purchase a Bible for a student at the school. Each day the wisemen move to a new spot. The kids are having so much fun searching for them. "The wisemen are following the star. They are looking for Jesus!" A great reminder to continue to search within our own hearts this Christmas season- are we focused on the true meaning of Christmas? A little peek at outdoor education. God blessed us with a beautiful December day!

Thank you!! *If your child has a birthday during the summer, we would love to celebrate on his/her half birthday or at the end of the school year. Let me know what works best for you. :) The Love Bazaar was a favorite! We loved picking out gifts for our family. The hard part is keeping a secret until Christmas, if the packages stay wrapped until then! :) We enjoyed a write the room activity to practice counting (using ten frames) and writing numbers. Finding hidden pictures around the room is fun! We love our second grade buddies! There were lots of smiles and giggles as we played games together. I love watching these relationships grow. I am not sure if the older kids or the younger kids enjoy it more. We have been reading about the faith of Hannah and how God answered her prayers. We learned that God already had a plan for Samuel. God has a plan for us, too. We talked about ways we can be God's helpers.
We continue to blend sounds to make words, listen for beginning and ending sounds, and practice writing letters. This week we focused on the letter Dd. We only have a few more capital letters in our handwriting practice books then we will begin focusing on lowercase letter formation. I will be praying over your families this Thanksgiving. We are in need of a parent to help with outdoor education on Tuesday from 1:00-1:30. Our special was switched due to us not having school on Friday. Please let me know if you are able. Also, with it being a short week, I will not be posting news next week. Enjoy the break with your families. Happy Thanksgiving! Notes/Reminders: *November 22-24: No School *December 1: Love Bazaar *December 15: Y5s and Kindergarten lead Christmas Chapel at 10:00 in the West Gym Welcome to the Coral Reef! God continues to show us how amazing His creation is as we learn about the coral reef. We had a lot of fun creating all the beautiful earth features and living things in a reef. I am so impressed. This week our Bible story focused on the tabernacle. We took a 3D tour of the tabernacle (YouTube video). As we toured the tabernacle, we were in awe of how our loving Heavenly Father chooses us. He wants to dwell with us and be near us. He is such a loving Father. We have been practicing for our Christmas chapel. Have you been hearing your child singing Christmas songs? Here's a little glimpse at your precious children praising the King, the Lord of Lords! We can't wait to lead chapel on December 15. We continue to work on letter identification and sounds. We use magnetic letters and white boards to build words. We are learning to break apart words into syllables and put syllables back together to make words. We are using our listening skills to identify beginning and ending sounds. They are such smart cookies!!
